The rarest wolves in Karnataka and the Gharial (long-snouted crocodile) have been brought in under animal exchange.
The Wolves and Gharials have been brought here from the Patna Zoo. Out of the eight wolves, there are three males and five females. Among the Gharials, there are two males and two females. These animals have been brought here to make the zoo more attractive.
The quarantine period of the two animals has now ended and people are now allowed to see them. Two wild boars have been sent from our Shimoga Zoo to Patna Zoo. Wolves are found only in some parts of Gadag district. Their population is dwindling there. Due to this, the wolves are interbreeding with local dogs. Due to this, the true breed of wolves is not seen.
Many animals have come to the zoo through animal exchange. For the last two years, various animals have been brought to the Shivamogga zoo from Thiruvananthapuram, Aurangabad and Indore, Mysore zoos under animal exchange. Tigers and lions were called from Aurangabad and Indore. Vikram is the most important among them. By the way, this is a white tiger. Vikram and Shravani are mated. They can reproduce soon. Also, work is being done with Bhadra and Rohini. Sara and Shiva are mated in the lion. A cub is expected from this. Tourists can come and see the animals during the Dussehra vacation.
Zoo Chief Executive Officer Dr Amarakshara said, under the animal exchange program, two animals were brought from Patna Zoo in September. Eight wolves and four Gharials were brought. Under the animal exchange, we have given two wild buffaloes from our zoo. Out of the eight wolves, there are 5 females and 3 males. Among the Gharials, there are two males and two females. Due to this, there are possibilities that our zoo will be included in the medium-sized zoo category. If everything goes as planned, there are signs that it will become the first medium-sized zoo in the state in December, he said.
