The National Law School of India University will hold its 34th convocation on October 17, ending weeks of uncertainty.
The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, has announced October 17 as the new date for its 34th convocation, which was earlier scheduled for September 12.
The university’s Executive Council and General Council approved the revised date. Graduating students will have the option of attending the ceremony and receiving their degrees in person or having them conferred in absentia.
Students will be asked to indicate their preference regarding attendance and degree collection.
The September 12 ceremony was cancelled by NLSIU on August 27, with the university citing “unavoidable circumstances”. The cancellation came amid a controversy over the proposed presence of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra at the event.
More than 700 current and former students had objected to their presence, following a similar controversy at NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad. At NLSIU, CJI Surya Kant, who is also the university’s Chancellor, subsequently met representatives of graduating batches to hear their concerns.
Following the meeting, students reportedly voted on whether they would attend a ceremony with the CJI present, without protesting or disrupting it. A majority reportedly supported the arrangement. Students were also told that the BCI chairman would not attend.
However, students were later asked to issue a public statement inviting the CJI, a condition they said was not part of the earlier arrangement. They did not agree to the demand, following which the September 12 ceremony was cancelled.
