Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Deputy Managing Director Nigel Clarke discussed India’s evolving growth trajectory, global economic shifts and the need for continued macroeconomic cooperation during their meeting in New Delhi on Monday.
Clarke, who is visiting India, met Sitharaman to review India-IMF relations and exchange views on developments shaping the Indian and global economies. The discussions also focused on India’s trade agenda, changes in the global trading system and the implications of recently concluded bilateral trade agreements.
The Finance Ministry said both sides stressed the importance of sustained India-IMF engagement to strengthen macroeconomic cooperation, support sound economic policies and contribute to greater regional and global economic resilience.
The meeting came at a time of significant changes in the international economic environment, marked by shifting trade patterns and continuing geopolitical uncertainties. Sitharaman and Clarke discussed how these developments could influence India’s economic outlook as well as global growth prospects.
The two sides also reviewed India’s role in supporting the South Asia Regional Training and Technical Assistance Center (SARTTAC). They appreciated India’s contribution to the institution and its role in strengthening capacity-building and technical cooperation across the region.
The discussions covered India’s growth trajectory alongside broader developments affecting international trade and economic policy. Recently concluded bilateral trade agreements were also discussed in the context of changes underway in the global trading system.
The engagement underlined the importance of maintaining close cooperation between India and the IMF as global economic conditions evolve. Both sides reiterated that continued dialogue can support policy coordination, resilience and sustainable economic growth amid a changing international landscape.
