Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has announced his next major project, ‘Operation Ganga’, based on India’s 2022 evacuation mission that brought thousands of citizens home from Ukraine after war broke out.
The actor unveiled the film’s first poster on social media, giving audiences a glimpse of what appears to be a large-scale dramatic project. The story will focus on the difficult evacuation carried out during the early stages of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
‘Operation Ganga’ is directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Vishnu Mohan. The first poster features Mohanlal prominently, surrounded by images suggesting conflict, urgency and national determination. The film is expected to combine elements of a survival drama and geopolitical thriller while focusing on the human side of the mission.
In 2022, Indian students and other citizens became stranded in several Ukrainian cities as fighting intensified. The evacuation became a major logistical and humanitarian challenge. Citizens travelled through dangerous routes to reach designated departure points, while Indian authorities coordinated flights and other arrangements to bring them safely home.
Mohanlal leads an ensemble cast that includes Arjun Rampal, Bhagyashri Borse, Parthiban and Adil Hussain. Their presence gives the film a pan-Indian appeal and could allow the story to explore different experiences during the evacuation.
The project is produced by Gokulam Gopalan under the banner of Sree Gokulam Movies. For Vishnu Mohan, the film marks a significant move into a much larger production based on recent history.
