Mysuru:
An awareness programme on the harmful effects of drug abuse was organised on September 4 by the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Basudeva Somani College, Kuvempunagar, Mysuru, in association with the Office of the Excise Inspector, Mysuru Division-3.
Inaugurating the programme, Dr. M. Puttaswamy, Chairman and Managing Trustee of the Institute of Education Trust, said youngsters in today’s modern society were increasingly falling prey to various bad habits. As a result, several people were becoming victims of serious diseases such as cancer, pneumonia and heart-related ailments every year.
He stressed the need to provide proper guidance to the younger generation about the harmful consequences of drug consumption. Such awareness programmes would help students obtain useful information and make informed choices, he said.
Resource person L.B. Vikram, Excise Sub-Inspector, Mysuru Sub-Division, said many youngsters were losing their way in life due to a lack of proper guidance. He called upon students to change their mindset through awareness programmes and avoid falling victim to social evils. The Excise Department was continuously working to identify networks involved in the sale and consumption of drugs and take legal action against those involved. Students should stay away from such activities and lead healthy and responsible lives, he added.
Presiding over the programme, college Principal Dr. Mahadevaswamy M. said every student should create awareness among people in their surroundings about the dangers posed by drug abuse and contribute towards building a healthy society.
Dr. T. Ramesh, NSS Programme Officer, delivered the introductory remarks, while Raghavendra P., Excise Sub-Inspector, Mysuru Division-2, proposed the vote of thanks.
Assistant Professors Dr. Divya K. and Kavya J., teaching and non-teaching staff, and A.C. Latha, Excise Inspector, Mysuru Sub-Division, along with excise officials and staff from Mysuru Divisions 2, 3 and 4, and a large number of students, attended the programme.
