Smart growth in a fast market: India’s digital retail explosion

NEW DELHI

India’s e-commerce landscape is on the brink of an unprecedented transformation, with market valuations projected to nearly triple from $125 billion in 2024 to an astounding $345 billion by 2030. A comprehensive new industry study titled Smart Growth in a Fast Market – compiled by research consultancy Infisum with backing from public policy think-tank Empower India, details the multi-faceted dynamics steering this expansion.

According to the findings, the sector is expected to compound at a robust annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.4 per cent over the next four years. This exponential trajectory is heavily underpinned by surging disposable incomes, deeper mobile and internet penetration across the country’s hinterlands, and an accelerating shift toward digital-first consumer habits. By the turn of the decade, online retail is anticipated to command between 10 and 12 per cent of India’s total retail spending, directly contributing roughly 2.5 per cent to the nation’s gross domestic product. Furthermore, the total pool of active online shoppers is projected to scale up dramatically to between 420 and 440 million users, further cementing India’s standing as one of the most dynamic digital commerce arenas globally.

A standout catalyst within this broader growth story is the meteoric rise of quick commerce. The report estimates that the ultra-fast delivery segment alone will skyrocket to a valuation of $65 billion to $70 billion by 2030, driving an impressive 45 to 50 per cent of all incremental e-retail growth over the upcoming five-year window. To sustain this hyper-localized demand, foundational logistics infrastructure must expand concurrently. Consequently, the national network of dark stores micro-fulfillment centers positioned strategically within urban neighborhoods is forecast to nearly triple, growing from 2,525 facilities in 2025 to approximately 7,500 units by 2030.

This physical and operational scaling coincides with an internal strategic pivot among top-tier industry players. Having initially prioritized aggressive customer acquisition and geographic expansion, firms are now recalibrating their business models to focus intensely on sustainable unit economics, long-term capital efficiency, and optimized supply-chain resilience. In tandem, cutting-edge technologies are reshaping backend operations; artificial intelligence and machine learning integrations are projected to boost overall retail productivity by up to 37 per cent by 2030.
