India’s real GDP growth accelerated to an estimated 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of fiscal 2026-27, prompting Union Ministers to highlight the resilience of the economy and credit reforms and policy measures of the NDA government.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the performance reflected the strength of the Indian economy, with nominal GDP growth estimated at 10.3 per cent during the quarter. Real Gross Value Added (GVA) also recorded robust growth of 8.2 per cent.
Sitharaman attributed the strong showing to the hard work and resilience of the people, alongside reforms undertaken by the NDA government and what she described as agile management of the economy. She said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, remained committed to expanding economic opportunities and creating conditions for sustained growth.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal welcomed the figures, saying the 7.8 per cent real GDP growth demonstrated India’s growing economic strength and resilience. He said the performance was supported by the efforts of Indians and complemented by reform-oriented government policies.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the growth was significant given global uncertainties, oil price shocks and supply-chain disruptions. He credited the collective strength of different sectors and the enterprise of India’s 1.4 billion people for helping the economy withstand external pressures.
Puri also highlighted India’s energy diplomacy as an important factor in navigating global challenges.
The remarks reinforced the government’s narrative that reforms and domestic economic activity are helping India maintain strong momentum despite global uncertainty.
