AMARAVATI
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is pushing ahead with an ambitious plan to build Amaravati as a modern capital city, hoping to create an urban centre that can meet the needs of a growing population. The project is being developed on the banks of the Krishna River and is being presented as a future-focused city with modern infrastructure and technology.
Thousands of workers are currently engaged at the large construction site, where roads, canals and government buildings are taking shape. The planned city includes a major legislative assembly building, government offices and high-rise administrative towers. The design also includes a large freshwater lake and a planned grid-based layout.
A major part of Naidu’s vision is the development of the Quantum Valley, which is expected to help give Amaravati a strong technology and research identity. The project aims to create an ecosystem for quantum computing by bringing together research institutions, educational centres and technology companies.
For Naidu, Amaravati is also closely linked to his political and economic legacy. He played a major role in developing Hyderabad as a technology hub during his earlier tenure. However, the division of Andhra Pradesh in 2014 left the new state without Hyderabad and created the need for a new capital.
Naidu now wants Amaravati to become an economic and technological centre for Andhra Pradesh. With support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and construction deadlines set before the 2029 elections, the government is seeking to turn the long-discussed capital project into a lasting reality. The success of the project will depend on whether its ambitious plans can be completed and sustained over time.
