Kolkata Police has registered a suo motu case against TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and rally organisers for allegedly violating Calcutta High Court directions during a student wing event.

Kolkata Police has filed a suo motu case against former West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee over an alleged violation of a Calcutta High Court order during the TMC students’ wing rally in Kolkata on Friday.
The court had allowed Banerjee to hold the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) foundation day programme on August 28 at Cathedral Road. However, it had directed the organisers to keep one flank of the road open. Police said the condition was not followed and that the event also continued beyond the time limit fixed by the court.
The FIR was registered at Hastings Police Station against Banerjee and the organisers of the TMCP meeting. A police officer said the case was registered over the alleged violation of the court order and that the role of everyone involved would be examined during the investigation.
Addressing the gathering, Banerjee accused the BJP of using the police to create fear among people and alleged that the force had become a “monstrous entity”. She said she would oppose what she described as police atrocities against her supporters.
Banerjee also said she would soon travel across the state and walk through the streets if her public meetings were stopped. She criticised the BJP government over alleged attacks on TMC leaders and accused it of divisive politics.
The TMC chief further criticised eviction drives against hawkers and said they should either be rehabilitated or receive financial compensation. She also accused the Election Commission of helping the BJP during the previous Assembly elections, alleging that voter names were illegally removed.
