India may have found a promising long-term solution to one of their biggest concerns in limited-overs cricket, with Nitish Kumar Reddy steadily emerging as a strong contender for the seam-bowling all-rounder’s role ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

For years, Hardik Pandya has been India’s most valuable all-round asset in white-ball cricket, capable of changing games with both bat and ball. However, recurring injuries have frequently disrupted his career and raised concerns about India’s dependence on him. Back issues, an ankle injury during the 2023 World Cup, recurring spasms and a recent quadriceps strain have highlighted the need for a reliable backup.

That search may have led India to 23-year-old Nitish Kumar Reddy, who first grabbed national attention with a memorable century at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the 2024-25 Test series in Australia. While initially regarded more as a batter who could bowl medium pace, Nitish has worked extensively to transform himself into a genuine all-round option.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup scheduled in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia—conditions expected to favour pace bowlers—India is keen to develop seam-bowling all-rounders who can contribute in both departments. Nitish has responded by making significant improvements to his bowling.

Ahead of the IPL season, he sought guidance from renowned fast-bowling coach Steffan Jones. The Englishman recommended adjustments to Nitish’s front-on action, stride lengths and delivery mechanics. The results have been encouraging, with the youngster increasing his pace from the high 120s to the mid-130 kmph range while occasionally touching 139 kmph.

Equally important, Nitish has added variety to his bowling through yorkers and slower deliveries. His well-executed yorker to dismiss Rahmatullah Gurbaz in the first ODI showcased his growing skill set. During the IPL, he bowled 31 overs for Sunrisers Hyderabad and claimed eight wickets, marking his most productive season with the ball.

With India set to play ODI series against England, West Indies, New Zealand and Zimbabwe before the World Cup, Nitish has a valuable opportunity to cement his place. His performances in Hardik’s absence could shape India’s plans for 2027.

The early signs are promising, and consistency over the next year could establish Nitish Kumar Reddy as a key figure in India’s World Cup ambitions.
