Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan chaired the final Cabinet meeting of his second term on Saturday, just two days before the Assembly election results are announced.
The short online meeting lasted around ten minutes and focused on important administrative decisions before the state’s political future becomes clear on Monday.
Kerala voted on April 9, and the results will decide whether Vijayan secures a rare third consecutive term or if the Congress-led United Democratic Front returns to power after years in opposition.
One of the main decisions taken during the meeting was financial relief for victims of the recent Valparai accident involving staff and family members of Pang Government U.P. School in Malappuram district. The vehicle had overturned, causing several deaths and injuries.
The Cabinet approved compensation of Rs 10 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund for the families of five people who died in the accident. The beneficiaries include the families of driver Noushad Ali, cook Sajida, Rukhiya, Shakeela and student Mohammed Hisham.
The state government also agreed to cover the medical expenses of Mohammed Shahad, Masneen and driver Mohammed Fahis. Officials said any treatment costs not covered by insurance would also be paid from the relief fund.
In another decision, the Cabinet approved the creation of 14 additional posts for the smooth functioning of the Twelfth Pay Commission.
At the end of the meeting, Vijayan wished his Cabinet colleagues well before the election results, bringing his second term close to an important political turning point in the state.
