Journalists need protection and support says Activist

Gadag

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, social activist Krishna H. Hadapada called for stronger protection and better welfare measures for journalists, saying they play a key role in safeguarding society. He said journalists act as watchdogs by exposing truth and highlighting issues, but often work under pressure and risk.

He pointed out that government schemes meant for journalists, such as health insurance, pension, housing, and travel benefits, are not reaching many at district and taluk levels like Gadag. He stressed that these benefits are rights, not charity, and must be provided without delay. He also said compensation for families of deceased journalists should be ensured properly.

Hadapada raised concern over increasing threats faced by journalists who report against powerful individuals. He urged the government to strengthen the Journalist Protection Act and ensure strict punishment for attacks on media persons. He said legal safety is necessary for journalists to work freely without fear.

He also highlighted the role of the public, saying people should support journalists and not remain silent when truth is questioned. Citizens must actively stand for justice and use information responsibly.

Calling for reforms, he demanded equal recognition for rural journalists, action against fake news, and independence of media from financial pressures. He said a healthy democracy depends on a free and fearless press.

He concluded that protecting journalists means protecting democracy itself and urged both government and society to act responsibly.
