The Andaman and Nicobar administration created a new Guinness World Record on Saturday by unfurling the world’s largest underwater national flag at Radhanagar beach on Swaraj Dweep, also known as Havelock Island. The massive Tricolour measured around 60 by 40 metres and was carefully placed beneath the sea during a highly coordinated operation involving several government agencies and trained scuba divers.
Lieutenant Governor DK Joshi, Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar and Director General of Police HS Dhaliwal attended the event along with senior officials from different departments. Personnel from the Andaman and Nicobar Police, Forest Department, Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard worked together with divers from local diving centres to successfully complete the underwater task.
The operation required careful planning and coordination because of underwater conditions and the large size of the national flag. At 10.35 am, Guinness World Records adjudicator Rishi Nath officially confirmed the achievement and handed over the certificate to Lieutenant Governor Joshi.
Speaking during the event, Joshi praised all participating teams for their teamwork, dedication and discipline. He said the achievement added another proud moment to the islands’ growing list of special accomplishments. Officials said the event also highlighted the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as an important centre for adventure tourism and marine activities.
The Andaman administration will attempt another Guinness World Record on Sunday at Swaraj Dweep by creating the “Tallest Human Stack” underwater. Senior officials, including the Lieutenant Governor, will attend the event. Authorities believe such global activities will boost adventure tourism and attract more visitors interested in scuba diving and water sports.
