Goods and Services Tax collections in India rose 8.7 per cent year-on-year to a record Rs 2.43 lakh crore in April, government data showed on Friday, marking the highest monthly GST mop-up since the tax system was introduced.
The previous record was set in April last year at over Rs 2.23 lakh crore, indicating continued strength in economic activity and consumption.
Domestic transaction revenues increased 4.3 per cent to more than Rs 1.85 lakh crore, while GST collections from imports surged 25.8 per cent to Rs 57,580 crore. The sharp rise in import-linked revenue reflects stronger external trade activity.
Refunds during the month also rose 19.3 per cent to Rs 31,793 crore. After adjusting for refunds, net GST collections stood at about Rs 2.11 lakh crore, registering a 7.3 per cent increase.
Economists often view GST trends as a key indicator of both formalisation in the economy and underlying demand conditions. The latest figures suggest steady growth momentum, supported by resilient consumption and trade flows.
The sustained rise in GST collections also highlights improving tax compliance and the continued expansion of the formal economy under the unified indirect tax regime.
