West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya on Friday criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following her visit to a strongroom amid concerns over alleged EVM tampering.

Bhattacharya claimed that the ruling Trinamool Congress leadership is anticipating electoral defeat and resorting to political theatrics. Speaking to media, Bhattacharya alleged that the people of West Bengal are growing weary of what he described as repeated political drama by the ruling party. He said that Banerjee’s actions reflect an inability to accept the possibility of losing power after years of governance. According to him, the visit to the strongroom was not a genuine concern but a calculated move aimed at shaping public perception ahead of elections.
He further stated that the Trinamool Congress, having been in power for nearly 15 years, must now prepare for a shift in political dynamics. Bhattacharya remarked that the party has benefited from prolonged governance and now faces increasing public scrutiny and dissatisfaction.
The BJP leader also reiterated allegations of widespread corruption under the current administration. He claimed that various sectors, including education, public works, and contracting, have been adversely affected, alleging that irregularities have become deeply embedded in governance structures across the state.
Despite his criticism, Bhattacharya acknowledged Banerjee’s personal political journey. He noted that she rose from a modest background and built her career through grassroots activism rather than political inheritance. He suggested that her understanding of the state’s socio-political fabric is precisely why she recognises the changing mood among voters.
Referring to a recent remark made by the Chief Minister about the future of her party, Bhattacharya interpreted it as a sign of uncertainty within the Trinamool Congress. He argued that such statements indicate concerns about the party’s long-term prospects in the state.
Expressing confidence in his party’s future, Bhattacharya said that the Bharatiya Janata Party aims to establish its government in West Bengal for the first time. He invoked the legacy of Syama Prasad Mookerjee and asserted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP will expand its political presence across the region.
The remarks come amid heightened political activity in West Bengal, with both ruling and opposition parties intensifying their campaigns and rhetoric ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
