Barber community demands equal welfare benefits support

Gadag

The Gadag District Savita Samaj held a Labour Day and felicitation programme at its office, where leaders demanded better recognition and welfare support for barber families. They said the barber community, part of the traditional Savita Samaj, deserves the same benefits given to construction workers, including insurance, pension, medical care and education support.

District president Krishna H. Hadapada said barbers work hard every day and should be included in organised labour schemes for social security and dignity. He also urged the Karnataka government and Labour Department to extend all worker welfare facilities to them without delay.

Elder Hanumanthappa Rampura said the barber profession is deeply connected to art and culture but is facing financial difficulties due to modern changes. He appealed for government support to protect and promote this traditional occupation.

Another elder Venkatesh Davangere praised sculptor Jayaram Bhadravati for bringing global recognition to the community through his large and small statues. He said such artists should be encouraged and rewarded to inspire young people to pursue education and skill development.

Jayaram Bhadravati, who was honoured at the event, thanked the community for its recognition and encouragement. Several community leaders and members from different taluks attended and supported the programme. They said unity is needed to ensure welfare measures reach every barber family across the district.

The gathering concluded with a call for stronger government action and respect for the contributions of the Savita Samaj to society. Speakers said recognising their work will help preserve tradition and improve living standards for future generations in Karnataka. They also called for immediate policy changes to ensure equal labour rights for all.
