Every person has the right to live with dignity and happiness, said State Human Rights Commission Chairman Dr. T. Shyam Bhatt. He said government officers must act as protectors of human rights and take quick action on complaints. He addressed officials at a hearing held in the Zilla Panchayat Hall in Karwar during review of human rights cases.
He asked them to avoid delay in public services and treat people with patience and respect while solving their problems. He also warned about misuse of the commission’s name by some groups and said complaints should be sent directly or through police. He said the commission receives about 500 complaints every month and many are inspected through district visits for faster settlement. He added that out of nearly 8000 cases, around 3000 are still pending and efforts are being made to clear them soon.
In Uttara Kannada district, 30 cases were heard and most have been reviewed with reports from the district administration. He said many cases will be closed soon after verification and officials should support quick justice for complainants. During the visit, issues like hostel shortage, student relocation, filling posts of doctors, and jail renovation were discussed and instructions given. Judicial member S.K. Vantigodi said everyone has equal opportunity and complaints are sent to departments for response and action. He said strict action and compensation will be recommended if officials are found guilty of negligence. In a press meet, Bhatt said complaints can also be filed online or through media reports for quick action. He said media plays an important role in highlighting human rights issues across the district and state. He clarified that the commission has no branch offices and warned against fake organisations using its name illegally. In Uttara Kannada, 27 of 30 cases were settled, three are pending for opinion, and five new cases were added. Officials from district administration, police and other departments attended the meeting. The commission said it will continue monitoring cases and ensure speedy justice for victims through coordination with all government departments in Karnataka state said officials present at meeting.
