HOWRAH
As West Bengal heads into the high-stakes second phase of its assembly elections, a local sweetmaker in Howrah has found a delicious way to soften the intense political rivalry.
By blending traditional culinary skills with election fever, a renowned confectionery has unveiled a unique collection of “election-themed” sweets that are quickly becoming the talk of the town.
Inside the bustling shop, the display cases are no longer just home to standard Rosogollas. Instead, customers are greeted by meticulously crafted Sandesh shaped like various party symbols. From the Trinamool Congress’s twin flowers and the BJP’s lotus to the Congress hand and the Left’s hammer and sickle, every major political faction is represented in sugar and milk. The shop owner has even used natural extracts to match the party colors, offering sweets in vibrant shades of green, saffron, and red.
“In Bengal, nothing happens without sweets, not even a revolution or an election,” the shop owner remarked. While the political climate outside remains polarized and heated, the atmosphere inside the shop is one of curiosity and camaraderie. Supporters of different parties can be seen standing side-by-side, buying treats that represent their favorite candidates.
As the state votes, these edible symbols serve as a gentle reminder of the shared culture that binds the people of Bengal together. While the official results won’t be known until May 4, for the residents of Howrah, the “festival of democracy” has never tasted quite this sweet.
