Mayor condemns Queens subway shooting of teen

NEW YORK

Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued a stern warning that “violence has no place on our subways” following a harrowing shooting that left a 15-year-old boy wounded on a crowded Queens train. The attack occurred during the height of the rush hour on a Manhattan-bound A train as it pulled into the 80th Street station, sparking widespread panic among commuters.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is currently questioning two persons of interest, though a weapon has not yet been recovered. Investigators believe the gunfire erupted following a heated verbal dispute inside the train car. Witnesses described a scene of “pandemonium” as riders dove for the floor to avoid the bullets. “Believe me, they were not firecrackers,” one witness told reporters, describing how passengers fled in terror once the doors finally opened at the platform.

The young victim was rushed to Jamaica Hospital and is thankfully expected to survive. Mayor Mamdani, who was briefed on the situation shortly after the incident, emphasized his administration’s commitment to protecting children on their daily commutes. He called the shooting “unacceptable” and vowed to increase safety measures throughout the transit network.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz joined the Mayor in condemning the violence, highlighting the urgent need to remove illegal firearms from the hands of young people. As the 80th Street station was cordoned off for evidence collection, city officials reassured a nervous public that every resource would be used to ensure the subway remains a safe space for all New Yorkers.
