Slug: Reforms need of the hour

NEW YORK

India is pushing for a major shake-up at the United Nations, demanding more power for developing nations.

During a high-level meeting at the UN headquarters, Indian official Sibi George called for the Global South to have a permanent seat at the table. He argued that the current UN Security Council is outdated and needs to change to stay relevant.

India’s message is clear, the world has changed since the UN was formed, and global institutions must reflect that. George pointed out that India’s goals for reform align closely with the African model, which also seeks a stronger voice for its nations. For years, India has been a vocal critic of the way the Security Council is run, stating that reform is the only way to solve global problems.

During his visit, George met with several top UN leaders to discuss peace missions. India is a massive supporter of UN peacekeeping, sending thousands of troops to help stabilize war-torn areas. Reaffirming this commitment, George highlighted that India remains a leader in global teamwork.

To start his trip, George paid his respects at a statue of Mahatma Gandhi, a symbol of peace. This visit is part of a larger effort by India to ensure that countries from Asia, Africa, and Latin America are no longer ignored. By seeking permanent status, India hopes to lead a movement that makes the UN fairer for everyone, ensuring that the world’s most populated regions have a say in global security.
